The Summerland Steam are proud to announce that returnee Alex Williams, the man affectionately called ‘Grizz’ by all who know him, will be named the team’s captain for the upcoming 2016/17 KIJHL Season.

Head Coach John Depourcq and General Manager Gregg Wilson proudly made the announcement at the conclusion of the Steam’s Summer Showcase this week, citing Williams’ “All Business” approach to the game as one of the many reasons for the logical choice.

“Alex is the perfect fit to wear the ‘C’ for the Summerland Steam this season,” says Coach Depourcq, “He’s a team guy first and a fiery competitor. He’s been with us for the past three seasons and has played an integral part in the success of our organization during that time. He shows his character at the most important times, he’ll answer the bell whenever it’s necessary, and he plays with an edge and a kind of quiet confidence that’s coveted by a lot of teams. He’s been a leader on and off the ice since the moment he got here, and that’s the reason we’ve chosen him as our captain for the 2016/17 season.”

Williams has spent the past three seasons with the Summerland Steam, appearing in 101 regular season games and collected 6 goals and 15 points to go with 132 penalty minutes.

“The job that ‘Grizz’ does on a regular basis for us is one that goes largely unnoticed because of how steady he is on the blue line, and we thought it was the right time to reward him for all his hard work” said General Manager Gregg Wilson, “He’s not the guy that’s going to score you 20 goals from the blue line and be an offensive dynamo, but he’s going to save you a whole lot more than that in your own end of the ice, and be a leader on and off the ice for his teammates.”

Williams, a 20-year old native of West Kelowna, BC, will convert to wearing the ‘C’ after playing the role of Assistant Captain for parts of the past two seasons. Last season he won the 2nd annual ‘Broadcaster’s Choice Award’, handed out by our broadcast team at the end of the season as sort of an ‘unsung hero’ type of award. Williams will lead a strong group of returning players, as well as new faces into the start of the KIJHL Season when the Steam open on home ice against the defending KIJHL, Cyclone Taylor Cup, and Keystone Cup Champion 100 Mile House Wranglers on Friday, September 9th at 7:30.

Season Tickets and Advertising Packages are on sale now, and can be arranged by calling 250-809-1820.

  1. Looking forward to following Josh Pilon this year as he starts a full season with the Steam a year older so who knows what he will bring to the team it’s all good.
