GAME NOTES:

  • Friday marks the 4th meeting of the season between Summerland and Kelowna, and 3rd of 4 at the Summerland Arena.
  • Summerland comes in having won their past 6, while Kelowna won their last one 2-1 in OT over North Okanagan. The Chiefs have won 3 of their last 4, including a 5-1 mid-week victory over the division leading Osoyoos Coyotes last week.
  • Ryan Lawson will sit the 5th and final game of a suspension he picked up Nov 7th vs Kamloops.
  • Kelowna will be without Kevin Roth, who remains sidelined with an upper body injury. He is out indefinitely with no timetable set for return. All the best in his recovery and hopefully he’s well soon.
  • Kelowna, just like the last time we saw them, still has a deadly powerplay. They operate at over 20% on the PP, which from my point of view all runs through their point men, and defenseman Josh Baird in particular. Summerland will have to do their best to stay clear of the sin bin in tonight’s game.
  • The Steam could possibly debut new addition Josh Pilon on Friday night against Kelowna. Pilon comes via trade from the Revelstoke Grizzlies and will wear #10 for the Steam. He recorded 2 Goals and 2 Assists in 11GP for the Grizzlies this season, but has not played a game since October 24th.
  • Jack Mills will look to continue putting up points for the Steam. He’s posted 26 points through 21 games to date, and has been consistent in doing so. He’s only been held pointless in 8 of the 21 contests, and has 6 points (4G+2A) in his last 4 games.
  • Summerland captain Paulsen Lautard is starting to heat up. He’s collected 4 points in his last 6 after going pointless in the previous 5. You can usually count on Lautard to produce points, but lately it’s been about MUCH more than that. His commitment to the defensive zone has been incredibly impressive over the past handful of games, and it’s only a matter of time before he gets the jump on the little goal scoring mini-slump he’s got going on.
  • Summerland goaltender Jacob Mullen has been nothing if not stellar since joining the team. In his 6 appearances with the Steam he’s holding a 4-2 record, while putting up a 1.68(!!) GAA and a .931 (!!) sv%.  Those are elite numbers, and it’s rubbing off on his goaltending partner Matt Huber as well. Huber has posted 3 straight goose eggs in his past 3 starts and carries a 180 minute scoreless streak into games this weekend.
  • Huber has been very good in his rookie season for the Summerland Steam. In 10 appearances to date he holds a 6-3 record, a 2.07 GAA and a .918 SV%.
  • These goaltending numbers mean more than just the numbers. It gives the coaching staff, and more importantly the players confidence that it doesn’t matter who’s in the net on any given night, they’re going to get quality goaltending.

  • Mike, Joel and myself will go live with full pre-game at 7:15 ahead of the 7:30 start on PlayFullScreen.com if you can’t make it to the game live.
  • PUCK DROP tonight is 7:30PM PST from the Summerland Arena. Doors will open at 6PM and IGA Summerland will be on hand collecting non-perishable food donations to help stock the shelves at the Summerland Community Food Bank. The first 100 people through the door with donations will receive FREE TICKETS to tonight’s game.
